Sligo Drama Circle Young People’s Theatre presents “The Children” by Edward Bond
Sligo Drama Circle’s Young People’s Theatre returns to the stage of The Factory Performance Space from March 31st to April 2nd with their new production of Edward Bond’s “The Children”. The play, specifically written for young people, uniquely combines both script and improvisation.
The play is set in a late 21st century apocalyptic landscape where human behaviour is monitored, living spaces are designated and where any emotional displays are immediately eradicated. The story revolves around a disturbed mother who sends her son on a bizarre errand which eventually has fatal consequences. His unquestioning loyalty to his mother draws him into a world that is changed forever. Leaving home, the teenage boy embarks on a journey with his friends encountering evil, destruction and eventually compassion.
Commenting on the play, written in 2001, the playwright said that is was designed to put young people through “extremes of experience” and put them in “fundamental searching situations”. He further elaborated that “when I write for children, I always write about the most profound questions because I think they’re interested in the most profound questions”.
The play is structured into twelve scenes, lasting about an hour, part scripted, part improvised, according to the playwright’s instructions, with the two adults in the play, as Bond insists, played by adult actors. Muireann Tóibín plays the Mother and Wayne O’ Connor plays the Man. The play is directed by Peter Milne who worked as an actor/teacher/director for many years in London with Harlow TheatreVan, The Cockpit Theatre-in-Education Team and Hoxton Hall Community Theatre. Tickets are available at €12 (€9 concessions & OAP’s) from The Factory at (071) 917 0431. More information on www.sligodramacircle.ie
