The Model has a vibrant opening season of music events to delight every musical ear over the next few weeks in the centre’s new performance space.
This month, The Model will be hosting a diverse range of musicians from Choice Music Prize Winner Julie Feeny, Kilkenny’s multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Hickey a.k.a. ‘Rarely Seen Above Ground’ (R.S.A.G.) and following that up with Duke Special, and Sligo based band Tucan during the month of June.
Julie Feeney Saturday May 22nd €22/20
You would be hard pushed to find a modern artist who better matches the profile of Bob Dylan’s celebrated lyric; “She’s got everything she needs, she’s an artist, she don’t look back.” than Julie Feeney. Not only did 2009 see the Galwegian self-release a spellbinding second album ‘pages’ to huge critical acclaim but it saw her mesmirise audiences all over the country with her unique sell out shows.
Producer, composer, orchestrator, singer, conductor, performer and instrumentalist; she first made her mark on the international music scene by winning the Choice Music Prize (Ireland’s equivalent of the Mercury Prize) with her debut album 13 songs. This album she self produced and self released, having played 11 of the instruments. She later orchestrated the album for 65-piece Ulster Orchestra with whom she performed, and premiered other concert commissions as a composer and conductor in the U.K. and Ireland.
2009 heard Julie’s extraordinary second album pages, which saw her again nominated for the Choice Music Prize, and received regular plays across the wide spectrum of Irish radio. She sang, composed and produced the songs in their entirety and conducted the Irish Chamber Orchestra on all of the instrumental music. The result is a collection of songs performed with stirring, spellbinding elegance, yet delivered with a strange, almost whimsical sense of fun. Julie headlines at the National Concert Hall in Dublin in May, before which The Model are delighted to welcome her to Sligo for the first time.
Tickets for Julie Feeney are €22/20 - €20 ticket price applies to all tickets bought before the 15th May. Available from The Model on 071-914 1405 or via tickets@modelart.ie
R.S.A.G. Saturday May 29th €15
R.S.A.G (aka Rarely Seen Above Ground, aka Jeremy Hickey) is a multi-instrumentalist hailing from the Marble city who’s been making waves since 2008 with his explosive live set and a double album release; Organic Sampler. RSAG is no stranger to Sligo audiences as he performed at The Model’s Offsite venue on Castle Street last year for a sell-out gig.
Duke Special, Bank Holiday Sunday 6th June €25
Duke Special hardly needs an introduction. Another 2 time Choice Prize nominee the Duke hails from Belfast with a truly unique ‘vaudeville’ sound. His songs are shaped by an omnipresent piano, harps, brass, strings and – his trademark on stage – an old gramophone. The results are romantic and passionate little hymns with the Duke’s soft vocals layered on top. Since the release of Songs From The Deep Forest, Duke Special has hardly been off the stage with packed gigs across Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Tucan, Saturday June 12th €15/¨*12
Túcan are an instrumental, acoustic-guitar based group hailing from Sligo. A genre splitting band that defy classification, their influences range from Tool to Paco de Lucia to Frank Zappa and Kíla. One of the most exciting bands on the irish live scene they have an explosive show that has the potential to leave an audience spellbound. Having toured Ireland extensively as well as completing tours of England, Denmark and mainland Europe, they're looking forward to coming home for a gig in The Model's new performance space.
*€12 price applies to all tickets bought before the 5th June.
