iYeats Poetry Competition
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Yeats summer school and the 70th anniversary of the death of WB Yeats, the Hawk's Well Theatre announces the inaugural iYeats Poetry Competition 2009 - an online national and international competition open to all and with a special award for poetry from poets under 25. Prize giving and a Public reading of the shortlisted poets will take place during the annual Yeats Summer School 2009.
The twin themes of the iYeats Poetry Competition 2009 will be POLITICS and LOVE. Poems will be accepted on these subjects with closing date of June 12th 2009
Judges
Niall MacMonagle is a teacher, critic and broadcaster. He is a frequent contributor to RTE Radio 1 and the Irish Times and has edited several anthologies including the Lifelines anthologies, Slow Time and The Open Door Book of Poetry.
Mary Branley was born in Sligo and has lived in Boston, New York, London and other places before returning to north Sligo in 1997. Her first collection of poetry "A Foot on the Tide" was published in 2002 by Summer Palace Press and her second collection "Martin,Let Me Go" will be published later this month. She was awarded the Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship in poetry for 2008 and is included in an anthology called The Watchful Heart, A New Generation of Irish Poets, being launched on May 1st. A teacher for 25 years, including 7 as visiting teacher for Travellers in Sligo, she also works with children in a creative project, Kids' Own Publishing Partnership which is a non profit arts organisation which publishes children's writing and illustrations.
How to Enter
Enter Online only. Files with entries must be in Word format (Word 97 - 2003) and submitted via our online entry form.
The general competition is open to all ages.
The iYeats Emerging Talent Award is open to all 16 - 25 year olds.
Entry fee: €5 per poem.
Prizes
First general prize of €300.
Emerging Talent award of €300.
Ten highly commended awards.
All Prize winners will have their poems published on the Hawkswell Website and will be invited to read their work at an informal ceremony during the 2009 Annual Yeats Summer School.
